St John’s is dedicated to environmental responsibility and the Eco-Church team have, on behalf of the church, applied for planning permission to install solar panels on the community centre’s roof. These panels are expected to supply up to 38% of the building’s electricity needs from renewable sources, which will not only benefit the environment but also lower our energy costs by an estimated £2,800 annually over the next 25 to 30 years.

To help fund this initiative, we have submitted an application to Surrey County Council. Securing this support will enable the Church to manage the centre sustainably, ensuring it remains financially viable and accessible to the local community at an affordable rate.
A total of 34 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are planned for the south, east, and west-facing roofs to capture sunlight throughout the day. Battery storage will be installed, allowing the centre to use solar energy into the evening or even in the event of a power cut!

The project is projected to offset around 2.6 tonnes of CO₂ each year, which, over the system’s 30-year lifespan, is equivalent to planting more than 3,000 trees.
We encourage everyone in the congregation and the wider community to support this effort, helping St John’s become more environmentally and financially sustainable so we can continue to provide a welcoming space for all for many years to come.
