Over recent months the PCC and Standing Committee have been continuing to consider the diocesan proposal to create a new benefice between St John’s, Redhill and Christ the King, Salfords, following the formal consultation opened earlier this year under the Mission and Pastoral Measure. Alongside this, we have been working through the detailed feedback received from the congregational survey, which offered valuable insights, concerns, and suggestions about how best to proceed.

It is clear from the responses, as well as from our discussions at PCC and Standing Committee level, that the current proposal raises significant practical, pastoral, and resourcing questions. Members also recognised, however, that there may be constructive ways for St John’s and Christ the King to collaborate more closely in mission and ministry if this can be carefully explored and properly supported.

Given the importance of approaching this work thoughtfully and prayerfully, and recognising the need for conversations with several diocesan partners — including Christ the King’s PCC, the Dean of Estates Ministry, and the Hospital Chaplaincy team — the PCC has requested, and has now been granted, an extension to the consultation deadline. This also allows time for the incoming Archdeacon of Reigate to take up office and to engage fully in the process as it moves forward.

To support this next stage, the PCC has agreed to establish a Working Group. Its purpose will be to examine possible options, consider the missional opportunities across South Redhill and Salfords, and help shape a response that is realistic, sustainable, and sensitive to the needs of both parishes. The group will report back regularly to the PCC.

If you have further thoughts or ideas that may help our discernment, we warmly invite you to share them with our Churchwardens,

Allison and Hugh, on behalf of the PCC
